Harrogate, Skipton and beautiful Bolton Abbey in upper Wharfedale are all within a half hour drive whilst a day trip to the vibrant city of Leeds might encompass excellent shopping, a superlative theatre production and a myriad other attractions including the famous Armouries. Bradford's Photographic Museum is also well worth a visit, and Fountains Abbey, Newby Hall, Harewood Hall and Harlow Carr gardens are easily accessible. A sports centre and golf course are found locally.

There are many popular seaside resorts along its coastline, including Whitby, Bridlington and Scarborough, as well as quieter villages and working harbours nestled among the rugged cliffs. The North York Moors, the Yorkshire Dales and part of the Peak District National Park offer wonderful opportunities for walkers, cyclists and climbers, as well as nature reserves for bird spotters and naturalists. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway carries more passengers than any other heritage railway in the UK and the National Railway Museum is to be found in the county capital city, York.
